Overweight and obesity are widespread health problems that affect individuals in many ways. Apart from reduced quality of life, obesity can also give rise to a number of comorbid diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, sleep disorders, joint and back pain, etc. Obesity has also been shown to entail an increased risk of developing certain forms of cancer, and the increase in risk appears to be linear, in other words, the more overweight you are, the greater the risk of comorbidity. The overall conclusion is that there are good grounds to claim that overweight and obesity entail an increased risk of premature death, and unfortunately these conditions also often entail reduced quality of life for the person concerned.
Obese and overweight individuals are in need of a treatment that permanently changes their lifestyle with regard to diet and exercise habits. This is difficult for many such individuals to achieve, and only around 3% are able to lose weight and maintain their lower weight over time. When conservative treatment involving diet and exercise, possibly in combination with some form of medical treatment, does not succeed, surgery is often recommended.
At Capio CFTK we perform surgery on patients with a BMI between 30-50. If higher BMI than 50 You are still welcome to contact us for information about weight loss before surgery.
Why choose Capio CFTK?
We have long experience of weight loss surgery, and since the start of our operations in 2007 we have helped more than 5,500 overweight patients achieve a healthy life and better quality of life. Our surgeons and nursing staff have great experience in the field. Capio CFTK’s concept is based on short waiting times, high quality and satisfied patients.
We have a support programme that lasts three years, with access to a nurse, dietician and surgeon when you are in need of guidance or have questions. Support is an aspect that we consider to be one of the most important components of a successful long-term treatment of overweight. You can call us, contact us via email or visit us at our Danish office in Copenhagen during the support period.
Keyhole surgery for weight loss
Our operations are performed with keyhole surgery (laparoscopic surgery), and we use two different methods: Sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The choice of method is determined in consultation with the patient during the medical consultation. In both methods there is hormone changes that affect hunger and satiety. Ghrelin is one of the hunger hormones formed in the stomach, and the production of this hormone decreases when part of the stomach is surgically removed. This hormonal change, together with the stomach’s reduced capacity, causes the patient to eat smaller portions and experience an earlier sense of fullness. After booth methods there is a lifelong need for vitamin supplementation and check-ups with regard to minerals and vitamins.
Regardless of the method chosen and used, surgery can never be the only solution. Surgery is a tool that is intended to be used together with lifestyle changes to achieve permanent weight loss. It is therefore important that every patient who undergoes surgery is aware of, understands and accepts this.
